Visit of pupils of elementary schools: “Nada Popović“, “Jovan Jovanović Zmaj“, ”Vuk Stefanović Karadžić”, “First technical school” and High School of Kruševac

On the occasion of the World Metrology Day within Days of opened door, pupils of elementary schools: “Nada Popović“, “Jovan Jovanović Zmaj“, ”Vuk Stefanović Karadžić”, “First technical school” and High School of Kruševac visited Directorate of measures and precious metals, Control and Supervision Section Kruševac.
The pupils were met with history of institution, the first Law on measurement, Meter convention, DMDM competences, mission and vision of DMDM as leading metrology institution in Serbia, activities and tasks in the field of metrology which are in function of improvement of business, scientific and other organizations as well as improvement of quality of life and people healthcare.
After short promo DMDM video was shown, study visit was continued with a tour through laboratories. In laboratory for mass measuring instruments, pupils were introduced with weight calibration process, work principles of water and electricity meters.
In Precious metal articles laboratory pupils were acquainted with methods of testing and hallmarking of precious metal articles.
Also, workshops in the field in the nearby Archeological Park were realized. Pupils measured distance between two points of interest with their steps. Step length was measured by meter strip then they counted distance of interest in meters converting it into feet, yards and inches.
They counted average length of their steps, confirming their knowledge about arithemtic mean. Pupils also measured length of their shadows, counting proportion based on the real value of their height.
After finished workshops pupils talked about Thales and Eratosthenes, which confirmed their interest for history of measurements and importance for learning, life and work.
