Post of Serbia published a commemorative postage stamp on the occasion of the jubilee "150 years of metrology in Serbia"
This year, the Ministry of Economy and the Directorate for Measures and Precious Metals are marking the great jubilee "150 years of metrology in Serbia".
The National Assembly of the Principality of Serbia voted, on December 1, 1873, the Law on Measures, which officially accepted the decimal metric system in Serbia and established the Department of Measures at the Ministry of Finance with the task of taking care of the control of measures and comparison of primary measures. The historical heritage of the Department of Measures of the Principality of Serbia is preserved today by the Directorate for Measures and Precious Metals.
On the occasion of this important jubilee, the Post of Serbia announced the issue of commemorative postage stamps, as well as envelopes, with the motifs of the first standards of the Principality of Serbia.
A postage stamp, apart from being a means of payment for postal services, has a significant role in the promotion of values, ideas and heritage, and its motifs are chosen with special care.
The motifs shown on the stamp represent the first standards of the Principality of Serbia - a kilogram weight prototype made of gilded brass, which was acquired in 1880 and a meter prototype, made of platinum and iridium alloy, with serial number 30, cast in the first series of prototypes in 1889.
The motifs shown on the envelope represent the standard weight of 1 kg with serial number 33, which the Principality of Serbia received after the signing of the "Meter Convention" and the cubator, a device used for inspecting and calibrating barrels and vats.
The background of the stamp and the envelope shows the certificate of the International Bureau of Measurement confirming that the Principality of Serbia received the prototype of the kilogram weight with serial number 11.
With this conceptual solution of the special collector's edition, a place in the history of Serbian philately has been secured, where the first standards of the Principality of Serbia will be visually preserved, as well as a trace of the celebration of this great jubilee.
